Loc A Fella Twist & Loc Gel Review

Ok so I've gotten Loc A Fella's loc butter in the past and absolutely loved it. It even lasted me 6 months. So i called myself ordering it again on Amazon a few weeks ago and received the Loc & Twist gel instead...I was infuriated at first because Loc a Fella's products are so difficult to find nowadays. I decided to try it anyway and am very pleased with the results. I used it on damp locs and secured with my clips for a few minutes. I only had time to freshen up the hairline, but when I came to work and looked in the mirror, I was stoked! My locs were dry and crisp and haven't unraveled at all...so unlike when I use any other loc gel without a dryer.... In my opinion it kinda has a masculine smell to it, but my co-workers said it smelled good. As long as it doesn't smell like Old Spice and keeps my hair in line, I'm ok. Here's a pic of the results

This is coming from a girl with eczema....Facial Cleanser works well on my sensitive skin, it's creamy, lather & sud free, but leaves a dry skin appearance with a little residue...which means you MUST use the The Moisturizing Cream. And in the same way, let the younger men be ruled by the older ones. Let all of you put away pride and make yourselves ready to be servants: for God is a hater of pride, but he gives grace to those who humbles themselves

This verse stuck out to me the most during church service on the 18th. Many of us, including me a lot lately (and it's so ironic that my pastor spoke of this issue) are asking how to get the Lord to recognize us, hear our call, and speak to us to guide us in the right direction. The first point was Humility. To humble yourself, submit to God, admit your faults, and ask for help.

I must admit I am a prideful lioness. And many times, not in a good way. I hate asking others for help, I hate admitting I am wrong (but I will at the end of the day), I hate showing weakness, and sometimes find i impossible to forgive those who are (in my eyes) undeserving.....

Lately I've been begging God to answer my prayer about direction in my career choice, which is really the only thing in my life I am completely unsure of. I haven't heard an answer; like I usually do in some unexplainable way or even a voice in my head he uses to communicate with me. Nothing. And while I have no confirmation, I go back and forth researching careers, worrying about my future, being unhappy forever as a CSR, refusing help, overspending to overcompensate, being too hard on myself, and holding a couple of vital grudges (still)....

It's crazy how ignorant I can all of a sudden be. But hey, that's what the Word is for. That is what church is for. To give us all a spiritual reality check. My pastor also went on to say Devotion, Worshiping, and Reading our Bible play a big part in God speaking to us. I needed a refresher because I know that when I start worrying, my heart is getting luke warm for God, since I'm not trusting him like I should be, trying to take matters into my own hands. I've always had a problem with patience when it comes to my direction. But this here is a journey I have to continue to embrace, even though it has its bumps, I still enjoy the beauty and madness of it all....

So this week I'm working on HUMILITY-

Knowing that in my flesh I am inadequate, yet I also knowing who I am in Christ.
Being a peacemaker without needing to fight for my rights. Being able to walk humbly in the power of God’s Holy Spirit, not my own personal power.
Putting others first. The meaning of humility in the Bible is one of loving others, not groveling! When I humble myself, I feel strong in the Lord. I don't need to be defensive

You can defuse arguments when you are humble.

You do not need to stand up for yourself in an angry manner. And you do not have to win every argument.
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger (Proverbs 15:1).

You can handle unfair treatment peacefully when you are humble.

You can respond to unfair treatment without being overcome by bitterness. Godly humility means you do not feel a need for vengeance or revenge.

You do not have to put on a "false front" when you are humble.

When you are humble, you can respond to and learn from criticism without defensiveness—whether it is deserved or not deserved. Likewise, you can be aware of your failures without being emotionally devastated.

Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift (Matthew 5:23-24).

You can talk with the right attitude when you are humble.

You can talk courteously and lovingly, regardless of the situation—even if you need to be firm or take strong actions.
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen (Ephesians 4:29).

A small recent study shows that eating these plum-colored root veggies can lower your blood pressure. When participants added six to eight small purple potatoes (golf-ball size) twice a day to their regular diet, after four weeks their diastolic (the bottom number) blood pressure lowered by an average of 4.3 percent and their systolic (the top number) by 3.5 percent. The scientists said purple potatoes have almost the same blood pressure lowering abilities as oatmeal.

Of course, fried and smothered in butter doesn't count — the taters in this study were microwaved and enjoyed plain (with the skins). Potatoes are naturally high in antioxidants, which protect your body from damaging free radicals, but frying destroys those healthy substances. If eaten sans butter, margarine, or sour cream, a half-cup serving of purple potatoes is only 70 calories, so they're not fattening when enjoyed just as nature intended.

Hopefully this research will help make potatoes of all colors popular again and clear them of their unhealthy reputation. Knowing all varieties contain healthy phytochemicals on similar levels to broccoli, spinach, and brussels sprouts definitely inspires me to eat them.

Sweet and Tangy Pasta Salad

Recipe to follow
1 cup shedded Napa cabbage
1/2 cup shredded red cabbage
1/4 cup minced onion
4 tbsp dried cranberries
2 tsp toasted pine nuts
2 cups cooked pasta
1 cup vegan mayo
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp agave syrup
1/2 tsp red pepperflakes.

Combine and refrigerate overnight. Serves 4-6

Reflections: Another Birthday, Another Blessing

How grateful I am to have survived another year in my crazy beautiful life. My day marks the beginning of the Leo reign; a time for the King of the Jungle to shine and rule the other zodiacs. It also marks the anniversary of the day I chose to break free of permanent relaxers. So this makes.....hmmmm...4 years of being Napturally beautiful. I can't believe I've come so far in my natural journey.

Sadly on this day one of my favorite artists, Amy Whinehouse, passed away :( ..... If anything this just reminds me how precious life is, not to take the one's we love for granted, stay true to God and myself despite my faults, stay away from the drugs, deal with you deep seeded issues, and live every day like it's my last. RIP Amy Jade Whinehouse

In other news. I have found love again. YAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY! I've grown so much as a woman, being able to spend time taking myself to movies, shopping, church, errands....all Alone. being comfortable in my own skin in public without feeling like someone is watching me saying to themselves"Hmm she's alone" Yes I am alone, not lonely. Just when I became comfortable being single and not ready to mingle, A special prince dropped in my lap. God continues to surprise me, reminding me how much I am loved and how much he much really does want the best for me and all of us, we just have to believe in him.

Nails Nails Nails!!!

I've never been the kinda girl that has to get my nails done every two weeks. Hell, I work so hard and much with my hands I never paid them any attention. The last time I had my nails done was......hmmmmmm....College Graduation! I was more into pedicures because I favored the look of my toes in hot peep toe pumps and sandals, more than my finger nails. Recently, I've developed a desire to try get matching mani pedi sets...Great experience, but can become costly, especially if you're a fan of acrylic or gel nails. I would accompany my line sister, Sher, to the Nail Shop and all of a sudden I felt like a little girl getting her first mani. Maybe because it makes a woman feel feminine, pretty, and expressive of their own personality....

I wasn't ready for the full commitment of falsies and acrylic (such a pain to remove and keep up with). So I started getting manicures with accompanying colors to match my moods. However manicures and polish changes don't last nearly as long as a full set of gel nails. Two days after I'd find my polish chipping and I'd be a little disappointed. I decided to take a break from my costly regimen and try doing my own regularly, which gives me the freedom to change whenever I like. I wanted something a little more funky than the traditional colors so I tried Sally Hansen's nail products. Outcome:

This leopard peel on polish comes in a set of 20 (which could fit on your toes as well) with handy, quick, and easy instructions....Just make sure you keep them room temp. One day it got a little hot in my room and when I tried to use it, it wouldnt stick to my nails as good as when I first purchased it. If this happens to you, just apply polish to your nails right before applying the nail decal....

I get so many compliments, people think I went to a nail shop and requested this design! Nope..just another creative bargain

If you know me, you know I love me some Pam Grier. She's the general profile icon on www.naturaldivaworld.ning.com. I have a portrait of her in my room and when I want to feel sexy or confident, I talk to Pam before I jet. She exudes individuality (with that bangin ass fro), sexuality, confidence, and freedom. She wasn't afraid to express herself through her art and made Blaxploitation films a classic movie genre for later generations and a force to be reckoned with! After all she is the 1st real female action star!

A New Year, Same Ole Me!

My BFF had a New Year's Vision Board Party the other day....that's basically when you get a few friends together, eat, fellowship, and create a visionary board that represents your goals for the year.

This year I wanted to keep my goals short and meaningful, to avoid the mid-year annoyance of intermission, I kept my vision for 2011 down to 3 principles:

1. Follow your instincts
2. Finish what you start
3. Let it go....

#1 relates to my mind, in regards to saying what i honestly about things, the choice to stop volunteering unnecessary information to people, and the freedom to make my life's decisions based on what i feel is right....listening to your instincts or as some say listen to the voice of God. This also includes the freedom of spontaneity when it comes to new adventures, experiences, and challenges comin my way!!! Who knows, maybe I'll go skydiving...though I doubt my instincts would agree, lol

#2 Is the value i have the most trouble with....completing what I start. Just finish it!!! Finish the half washed dishes, finish projects...like my undergrad college scrapbook, organize bill and misc piles, get back on my workout routine...etc etc etc. I have a serious passion growing a name for myself in the Natural World which includes my website, it's my baby that needs some nurturing. I would love to finally get a passport and become a citizen of the world. The most important aspect my search for self discovery is a compelling career...something where i can help people, create things, love what i do, and get paid vast sums of money!!!!! well.....I'd go for a medium salary. Not hard to please, but hard to decide.....I don't want to keep making the same mistakes....

#3 My last basic principle is Letting it go! What is 'it' you ask? It's everything that hinders me emotionally; past break ups, self esteem issues, fears, family drama, just all of it! All the crap, the baggage, the tears, the negativity, the procrastination, the devil, the enemy, false and unrealistic expectations of myself and others...LET IT GO

I'd like to hear some resolutions, goals, or visions for 2001. Please drop me a line....

TEENAGE DREAMS: mind, body, soul........LOCS

My beloved LOCS are officially TEENAGERS now! What's ironic about that is I feel like a teenager......emerging from the awkwardness of puberty into a more independent state of mind. Figuring out what I want from myself and also what I want for myself, and most importantly what God wants from lil ole me.....Most of my life, I have lived in fear. Fear of others, fear of misconceptions, fear of being alone, fear of expressing my thoughts to a world that doesn't understand me (with the exception of a few).....It's been almost 2 years since I began this journey and I can honestly say that the more my locs grow my soul gets greener....

The fear of the unknown isn't completely gone...I'd say it's less intimidating. I'm poking fun of fear, seeing what the big hype is all about. In order to completely rid of fear forever, however, involves confrontation. So far so good, but I'll be grateful for the day when I can look any fear in the eyes and laugh! As of now, fear gets a chuckle, as opposed to the past when I'd cry like a toddler on the scene.

These Teenage years are all about being comfortable in your own skin, free to express yourself, and know that it's ok to be 'feelin yourself'....and in these dreads, I'm definitely feelin myself. My hair swings like never before, and with me being a member of Allllpha Kappa Allllpha Sorority Incorporated, the conceit can only get worse. Why should I be humble right now? Growing up, I've always been shy and slightly insecure when it came to my hair. I never had hair to grow past my neck and now after only 2 years of patience and lack of chemicals, my locs are damn near at my shoulders!

My weight, I'm OK with. I always thought I had to be a certain size to be respected, or feel good about myself. So I lost 30lbs over the course of a year (which was a year ago)....After a bad break up and some good food, lol, I may have gained about 15 of those pounds back. In the past if I was aware of weight gain, my world has ended. But now, who the fuck cares? (excuse my language). I'm at a point in my life where I could give a damn about being Kim Kardashian's size, as long as I look good in what I wear. The little discipline I have won't let me exceed a size 10/11, which is fine by me and the men who want me for who I is...... I've still come a long way.

As far as love is concerned..... haven't quite figured it out yet. I do know that I'm a sucker for it. Gets me open every time and at times drained the hell out of me. Love turns me into a complete and utter fool and regardless of how bad I get hurt, I just keep coming back for more. As of now, I'm taking a break from that tricky thing called love until I get myself intact. I'm tired of loving the unworthy and fearful and getting nothing in return. Right now I'm exploring lust as a means of self control. I know that sounds strange, but I feel that a casual situation helps me learn to control my emotions. Good bye angry black woman syndrome and hello to the girl who keeps it cool! It doesn't always get me what I want, but it helps me keep some privacy, dignity, mystery, and avoid embarrassing situations. Quiet the crazy ladies!

3RD YEAR NAPPIVERSARY

I just had my 3rd year anniversary in the natural world and I'm feeling lovely and free like Jill Scott said. Locking my hair was the best thing I've dome for my hair and myself. Everyday is a new experience, for now I have more styling options than ever before. My locs are still babies, but every week I see them mature more and more as the length and my wisdom increases. I wonder where I'll be in life when they reach my back. Will I be married, with children, or overseas, in a new career helping others? What kind of energy will my locs hold; creative, knowledge, self assurance, freedom, health, spirituality...Only time will tell but I'm loving every minute of the journey. Peace and Love to the loc-wearers and the natural divas of the world!

I love the summertime, mostly for swimming! the bad thing about it, however, is the chlorine from swimming pools in my locs. I went swimming, a few weeks back, right after a fresh wash and retwist. big mistake. after swimming i had to wash the chlorine out. Greeeaaattt.... My roots are already thin and now I feel i'm making it worse with frequent retwisting.

My faithful members of Natural Diva World tell me not twist as much and I try to leave them alone like in the early budding days, but I have this weird obsession with each hair belonging to a specific loc because I always figured that there is not supposed to be any loose hair when you loc! I don't mind the nappy look, I just want to make sure each patch of hair knows where to go at the end of the day.

I forget at times the the whole point of locking is to let your hair be free...and now i'm putting stipulations on it's freedom. Mature Lockheads are so much more easy going about their locs. They mention dragonheads combined locs at the roots) and even sewed a couple together. Many have freeformed. Many only use 1 product for twisting and moisturizing.No biggie. Yet I notice those mature lockheads have the healthiest looking locs from root to tip.

I do notice many other recent locwearers who have the same problem as me. What does this mean? Have we not enough patience? Do we value the look more than the importance of locs? I can only speak for myself, but I think at times I do. Locs have become mainstream recently and I think we try to keep up with the styles more than nourishing our locs. We care about the products more than the simple things. And we are so anxious to get them long, so we can wear more styles. It's great to have versality with locs, but sometimes I loose focus on the beginning reasons for taking this step into Locdom.

So if you are having the same issue as me with thinning locs, fret not. Take this as a message from your hair that YOU CARE TOO MUCH. Be easy and don't sweat the small stuff. Don't twist locs so tight and let it air dry a little before twisting (because we twist tighter when hair is soaking wet, this can thin the roots). And if you're still worried after trying some new tactics, consult a pro!

The book I'm reading now is called Mocha Manual to Turning Your Passion Into Profit, by Kimberly Seal-Allers.
For a long time I've been thinking about channeling my creativity through starting my own business, but have let fear take over my drive to prevail. Fear of not succeeding, fear that my products may not be desirable or good enough to create a name for myself. I thought this book could give me some encouragement and guidance.

So far, I'm loving it! It gives you success stories from women who have been through all walks of life. It teaches you how to figure out your strengths, weaknesses, desires, and gives you helpful tactics. It also teaches you how to do a business plan, which I have been stuck on for the past 5 years!

It really explains, in layman's terms, what starting a business is all about, what to expect, and how personally rewarding it can be with diligence and dedication.

I recommend anyone who has been considering starting a business to cop this here book. I got mine from Amazon for $8. But right now they're on Amazon for $3.97 and up! You can't beat that! Happy Reading!

1) How long have you been natural?
I've been natural for 2yrs.

2) What prompted you to become natural
In high school I did straw sets and wore my relaxed hair wavy
and I absolutely loved it! After that, I wanted to see my natural
texture. I thought, if my hair waves and curls with a relaxer, Then
I must have a pretty good texture! Also my hair was super long when
I was younger. As soon as my mom put a relaxer on my hair it got
extremely thin and super short. My hair hates relaxers!

3) How long was your transition?
It took me 3yrs to transition

4) What type of reaction did you get from family, friends, and significant others?
Well my mom & sister like it, I think it takes my mom back
to my younger years, especially when she presses it! Lol. The rest
of my family doesn't care for it but that's ok! :)

5) How is the dating scene for you and your natural hair?
Honestly, things haven't changed. I've never been a big dater
and being 23 and in college doesn't change that much! Guys still
want to talk to me and still compliment me but no dates. I think
that's due to my own personal view of dating... Casual dating is
practice for divorce. If you get angry with someone or grow tired
of them you just walk away.

6) How did you you transition ( braids, flat irons, wigs, sew ins, etc.)?
I transitioned with my all time favorite Flawless Weave (sew in)! The longer the better! Lol

7) Did you start the transition yourself or consult a

texturizer on the hair but I wouldn't even let her do that! Lol

The bun! Pulled up or back!

Nope. I try to stay away from those! I'm no chemist by a long

I co-wash my hair every morning and wash it with shampoo every
weekend. Nothing fancy but it works! :)

13) Why do you love your natural hair?
Because it's soft, long, healthy, easy to style, stylish, and
the list goes on!

14) What is the most difficult thing about having natural
hair and how did you overcome it?
Well though styling may be easy, it can be a bit time consuming.
Because I co-wash every morning I'm in the shower longer so that
slows me down and makes me have to rush out the door for class. I
had to start getting up sooner so that I wouldn't be late for
class.

15) What is the craziest question you were asked about your
hair or a story you would like to share?
I have a hair straightening story! I don't wear my hair straight
too often, and when I do my mom presses it! A few years ago I
didn't feel like waiting on my mom to press my hair so I tried to
do it on my own. Well, I let the comb get too hot & burned a
good bit out! Lol. It turned gold and then the little length that I
had fell off only to leave little short fried roots! Lol I cried
and vowed that I'd never press my hair again! Lol

16) What's your advice to someone interested in going
natural? locking?
My advice is embrace your texture! No one texture is the exact
same. Keep looking forward and dare to be different! :D

17) If you have children (girls), what is your opinion on
their hair (keep it natural until they choose otherwise, forbid
perms, perm it, etc.) If you don't have children (and desire to one
day) what is your plan for their hair?
I don't have any children but when I do have them i will not
relax or press (lol) their hair! I'll leave that decision to them
when they get older. I hope that they'd choose to stay on that path
but once they are old enough it's their decision... Not mine!
18) If you could be any type of fruit, what would you be?
why?
If I could be any fruit I'd be a pear! Pears are the only fruit
that I can think of with a shapely "figure" and they are sweet and
they don't have a tough skin. That to me means they are delicate
like a lady ! :D

lookin for love in all the wrong places

The other day I was listening to the Word via CD while working at my temp job. This particular CD was entitled Naked and Unashamed: Healing Heartbreak. The title comes from Genesis 2: 25 'The man and his wife were both naked and they felt no shame.' I listen to it ever-so-often when I'm feeling some resentment from past relationships and need spiritual food to get me thru it.

The CD suggested (and I always listened but never actually did it until now) I write down all of the guys I was involved with, mark the one's I was emotionally involved with, mark the one's who hurt me, and mark the one's I need to forgive. After doing this I realized, I had some serious emotional attachments to SELFISH people who hurt me and I have yet to forgive them for it. I also noticed there were only about 2 I didn't have serious issues with, which was in my early years. But after puberty, it seemed like I found what I thought was love in ALL THE WRONG PLACES. I was in love with people who either didn't love themselves, or didn't know how to love. I, in turn, loved enough for the both of us until I grew weary and gave up. I carried baggage from one relationship to another with hope and desperation to please, yet each one added to the pile and increased my painful load.

However, the last one was the worst. He was a combination of everything I thought I wanted, and a a little bit of all the assholes in the past who screwed me over; of course I didn't see the latter until I removed my love goggles. The good thing about him was he brought me to reality. He helped me realized I put him before my father God. He helped me realize how misguided in relationships I was because I had not the proper covering from a man. He helped me realize that no one could love me better than God. He helped me see what it is I really want in a relationship with a man.....To be Naked and Unashamed. Not just physically, but more important, emotionally. To feel no fear as we walk together in Christ.

I want someone who has my best interest at heart. No he doesn't have to help me do girly things. No he doesn't even have to be able to cook and watch romantic comedies with me 24-7. I just want him to love and follow God, and that alone shows me we can work on everything else. I want him to help me stay strong in my spiritual walk, and I in turn will do the same.

As I looked at my list of past heartbreaks in amazement, I abruptly decided to forgive them. I decided to move on. As much as I may still think of them (good and bad), they probably are having the best time not thinking about me at all. I decided to write each of them a letter of how I feel, end it with forgiveness, then burn the letter, and let the ashes dissolve in the wind. I decided to stop reaching in my past for answers. I decided to stop trying to figure out when, where, and why we fell apart. Why I wasn't enough. It's pointless, because at the end of the day, honestly, I know I'm a good woman and someone will appreciate me someday. Why am I wasting my time trying to figure out why someone (who is screwed up themselves) didn't love me enough to change? Someone will see my worth. He will know that he deserves me, as I deserve him. What he doesn't deserve, are my currents efffects of past relationships.

God didn't put us all here to be alone forever, for the Bible says 'it is not good for man to be alone' . Therefore I'm not going to spend my remaining 20's wondering why I'm not married yet like some of my friends. I'm simply going to spend it enjoying my freedom and being open to love's newest possibilities. When the time comes, I want to be completey ready to be Naked and Unashamed with him forever.

I saw locs as a way of expressing myself being free and being
different, to me it was me matching to the beat of my drum. Even at
age 13 I knew this was something I wanted to do.

One year.

4. What made you decide to loc your hair?

I was turning 30 that year and realized a new chapter in my
life, new me, it was the opportune time to begin the journey. Time
to express who I was, to be free to just do ME.

6. What type of reaction did you get from family, friends,
and significant others?

Growing up in the Caribbean “respectable people” didn’t wear
locs or dreds as its called, it was frowned upon. I initially my
mom thought it was a phase. In December she said to me “you still
have those things in your hair?” Some friends were against it
others encouraged me. But being the person I am frankly I didn’t
care cause I match to the beat of my own drum.

7. How is the dating scene for you and your locs?

Nothing has changed really, only issue is folks on a date asking
to touch my hair- grrrrrrrrrrrr.
8. How did you start your locs: braids, coils, twists?

I don’t have a favorite style, as I look at my hair as an art form so I

Shea butter all the way- I make my hair treatment: shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil,
avocado oil, almond oil and lavender oil

Wash every 2 wks, palm roll if am in the mood, grease my scalp
with top brass (because I do have dandruff). In between treatments
include oiling and shea butter crème also sleeping with a satin cap
is a MUST.

15. Why do you love your locs?

I consider my locs my babies. They empower me, there a days when
I don’t feel beautiful but looking in the mirror my hair reminds me
that I am an empress, a queen, and that lifts my spirit. Embracing
those thoughts has helped me in loving and accepting me-Delma.

16. What is the most difficult thing about have locs and how
did you overcome it?

The thought of rolling my hair after washing, but I look at it as
me romancing my hair- we have a love/hate relationship-lol. My hair
is my crowning beauty so yeah I do have to take care of it.

locs or a story you would like to share?

One day on the train lady comes to me “excuse me Ms, but your
hair is beautiful” I responded very graciously. What stunned me was
her next question “do you mind if I touch it” my response to her,
“do you mind if I touch your weave”. Nuff said.

18. What's your advice to someone interested in going natural
and/or locking?

Go for it, it’s is a journey, but it’s one you have to be
prepared for mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Many consider
it a style but it’s more than that. It is freedom, it is
empowerment, it is self love embrace it enjoy the ride.

19. If you have children, what is your opinion on their hair
(keep it natural until they choose otherwise, forbid perms, perm
it, etc.) If you don't have children (and desire to one day) what
is your plan for their hair?

I have not kids but yes my wish is one day if I do have a kid I
will loc be it boy or girl.

why?

A mango- its sweet and juicy, also one of my favorite fruits as
a kid. I have many fond memories of sitting under the mango trees
or climbing them on hot summer days.

Pictured above is the lovely, sultry Jill Scott at the movie premiere of Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married Too" (I can't wait to see it). I think this style would be great for natural divas, or those who are transitioning. You could even add some hair for body and length. How versatile of Miss Scott!

I found this pic "On the Road to Queendom" blogspot. This lovely is freeforming her locs and I must say they look so fly!!!! Kinda makes me want to combine some locs for the width. I think a lot of people are afraid to freeform because of the unknown outcome and the fear of not being able to control every aspect of the locking process, but this diva gives me a whole new outlook!

Janelle Monae, on of my fave artists, is famous for her natural mane. I imagine to gain this look, you'd need big roller (or great tuck and roll tactics) and a lot of hair pins. I think this would be a great look for an afrobella with a whole lotta hair who wants to try something new. Finding God

Have you ever felt like been missing something out of your life? Using relationships with the opposite sex to feel whole, buying material things more than you need, always trying to overcompensate to feel appreciated? Well this was me. Have you been stuck in an emotional rut longer than you realized? Well welcome to my world. It's hard to describe the full extent of what I've been going through emotionally because I'm still trying to sort things out. Fortunately day by day I grow more and more in God's image. Since I've found God, everything makes since now.

In November, I started attending Victory World Church, right outside of Atlanta, GA. Before I started going there, I always have brief moments with God, a shaky relationship; kind of like being friends with benefits, but not a real relationship. But ironically, I put my all into my friendships and relationships with people who continuously let me down. And I honestly got tired of it. Sometimes it takes getting things taken out of your life for you to wake up and find God. I realized we can't put our faith into people, we're all human and can't expect a human made of flesh to the perfect being in our lives....Jesus is that perfect being. The only one that can complete me. The sooner I surrendered to him, the sooner I got peace of mind and begin to see things clearly in my life and relationships. I then decided to be accountable for my actions and become committed to growing my relationship with God. That's what I love about my church, they really make you want to look at yourself in the mirror, take some responsibility, and make the Lord happy....and in turn, you'll gain everlasting life.

The sooner you realize how temporary life is, how we are not of this world, just in it. The sooner bigger problems become little problems in your life. Life, my friends, is just a dress rehearsal for what is to come. When you face God he will ask you 2 questions: 1) What did you do for Jesus? 2) What did you do with the gift I gave you? What will you say. I'm working on my answers now....God Bless

Black History Month: The History of Dreadlocks

Though I do not recognize my locs as dreadlocs, mainly because I do not believe the look is dreadful; as the reason for the term....Anyway I thought I'd share the history of Locs for those who are interested in where they came from.

The first known examples of dreadlocks date back to North Africa. In ancient dynastic Egypt examples of Egyptians wearing locked hairstyles and wigs have appeared on bas-reliefs, statuary and other artifacts. Mummified remains of ancient Egyptians with locks, as well as locked wigs, have also been recovered from archaeological sites.

The Hindu deity Shiva and his followers were described in the scriptures as wearing "jaTaa", meaning "twisted locks of hair", probably derived from the Dravidian word "caTai", which means to twist or to wrap. The Greeks, the Pacific Ocean peoples, the Naga people and several ascetic groups within various major religions have at times worn their hair in locks, including the monks of the Ethiopian Coptic Church, the Nazirites of Judaism, Qalandari Sufi's the Sadhus of Hinduism, and the Dervishes of Islam among others. The very earliest Christians also may have worn this hairstyle. Particularly noteworthy are descriptions of James the Just, first Bishop of Jerusalem, who wore them to his ankles.

Pre-Columbian Aztec priests were described in Aztec codices (including the Durán Codex, the Codex Tudela and the Codex Mendoza) as wearing their hair untouched, allowing it to grow long and matted.

In Senegal, the Baye Fall, followers of the Mouride movement, a sect of Islam indigenous to the country which was founded in 1887 by Shaykh Aamadu Bàmba Mbàkke, are famous for growing locks and wearing multi-colored gowns. Cheikh Ibra Fall, founder of the Baye Fall school of the Mouride Brotherhood, claims that he was "the first dread in West Africa".

Africans

Africans and people of African descent are known to wear this hairstyle. Members of various African ethnicities wear locks and the styles may change from one group to another. The warriors of the Maasai nation of Kenya are famous for their long, thin, red dreadlocks. Many people dye their hair red with root extracts or red ochre. In various cultures what are known as Fetish priests, sangomas, or shamans, spiritual men or women who serve and speak to spirits or deities, often wear locks. In Benin the Yoruba priests of Olokun, the Orisha of the deep ocean, wear locks. The Himba people in the southeast of Congo-Kinshasa also dye their locks red, but their style is thicker than that of the Maasai. Other groups include the Fang people of Gabon, the Mende of Sierra Leone, and the Turkana people of Kenya.

Africans brought the hairstyle with them to the Americas during the African diaspora. As a result of this the style can still be seen on people of African descent in North America, South America and the Caribbean. Recipe: Stuffed Turkey Burgers

You'll Need:
1 1/4 pounds lean ground turkey breast
1/2 cup chopped roasted red peppers
1/2 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
1/4 teaspoons salt
Freshly ground black pepper

To Prepare:
Divide turkey into 4 equal sized rounds. Make 2 equal sized patties out of each round so you have 8 patties total. Sprinkle 4 of the patties with 2 tablespoons red peppers and cheese, and top with remaining patties, working the turkey around the edges to seal burgers closed. Season with salt and a few grinds of pepper. Grill or broil until cooked through, about 5 minutes per side.

United Nations Trying to STOP adoptions of Haiti's children!

Ok so I was inquiring on the net how to go about adopting a child from Haiti, not just because of the recent tragedy, but because it's the poorest country in the western hemisphere. They live off of $1 dollar a day, and they actually encourage the adoption of infants before older kids (though it doesn't matter to me) because they have the highest mortality rate. I sent an inquiry to Hope for Families and this is the response they sent me:

The ISS (international Social Services) of the UN, is as I type, petitioning to have all adoptions from Haiti ordered to cease. Our own embassy in Haiti, although not destroyed and fully functioning, is still demanding that every adoption file be in perfect order before they allow a child to leave the country for the United States. They refuse to use common sense in any aspect of their dealings - this from an orphanage worker, who reported to us yesterday, on the ground in Haiti.

The UN is afraid of human rights violations - their official position is that they feel it is better for the child to stay in his / her country of origin than to be adopted or fostered outside the country. They are officially referring to the tragedy of the Indonesian tsunami. Here is an Email from a orphanage worker yesterday that tried to get some orphans processed at our embassy. This is appalling:

"The only way to describe Haiti right now is a living nightmare. The lack of coordination and the practicalities of traveling from the Embassy to the airport and back to the orphanage makes it impossible to work with any efficiency and we can accomplish very little. Today we spent over 3 hours trying to get to the Embassy with 15 children – 14 under the age of two – and then spent 9 hours at the Embassy. We walked out with few parole visas and were advised that DOS had left for the evening so we would get our adoption visas the next day. After risking my life to enter an extremely damaged building to recover files and lugging them to the Embassy it was frustrating to say the least to have accomplished so little. In addition, I know I will need to stay up all night tonight to go over 40+ cases to assess the documents and to organize them, all while under a tent and using a flashlight. We are too scared to try to sleep inside and who can sleep anyway when every little noise or jar wakes you up in fear? The conditions are unfathomable and I cannot understand why we do not have a centralized location to serve these orphans – those already established as being in need of a family before the earthquake. I am so thirsty, but cannot drink as often as I would like because we are running out of water and I cannot take what the kids may need, although we came into Haiti with more than enough for us, we have to share what we have.
I have to stay strong here and not fall to pieces but the situation is truly impossible and is leading to unnecessary delays and continued and increased risk to children already established before the earthquake as orphans (as well as MANY others). I have so many fears – another aftershock that woke us so roughly on Wednesday morning and a wall tumbling down on our heads, children starving, the orphanage being looted as the frustration continues to grow regarding the delay in distributing supplies, children dying from sickness (almost all the children here have a deep cough and we have few meds. to offer), and ultimately, what other diseases will result from the conditions here.
The children are sleeping outside on soiled mattresses and in wet sheets – there are not enough diapers for them to be used as needed. They are scared to death and will cling to anyone who reaches out a hand. All of the people who experienced this horrific catastrophe seem to be suffering from post traumatic stress – quite understandably – and yes, I am qualified to diagnose.
I am having such a hard time seeing that orphans are once again being used as political pawns in spite of this monumental tragedy. I am standing in the midst of a nightmare where I am thirsty and hungry and scared – but I have a US passport and eventually I have the chance to go home to a warm bed, plenty of food and people who love me. When did common sense exit the entire equation regarding children’s welfare and establishing what is in the best interests of a child? How many children must die unnecessarily in the midst of this crisis because of bureaucratic red tape when simple and temporary solutions are not that difficult? But, I guess I should expect this – because we are dealing with very poor orphans and how high on the priority scale do they fall? When I initially heard about the US response to the orphan crisis in Haiti I was SO PROUD. I was so grateful that Obama was our President, Hilary Clinton was our Secretary of State and that for once we were going to get this right. Unfortunately, it seems that the US has again bowed to outside pressure to be politically correct and back down from what we know to be morally right. I do not think there is any person with an ounce of compassion who could view this situation and not believe that immediate and decisive action is necessary to save the children of Haiti. Enough will die without us contributing through inaction and inefficiency.
Please pray for all of us here. We need it desperately."

At Hope For Families - we encourage you to contact your Senators, US State Department, and Congressmen. We, like other agencies, feel we have a plan to help free up this political nightmare for the children of Haiti. Over 20,000 people are now dying every day in Haiti from the secondary infections and sickness that is setting in. We have presented a detailed plan to help free up the process to representatives of the Haitian Government. We anxiously await their response. It is our opinion that in NO way is it better for an orphan child to remain in Haiti than to be orderly processed to an international adoptive family. Please join us in calling for action.

My beloved locs turn 1 year old today. In celebration, I thought I'd post a collage showing my progression from the beginning to now. I must say the 1st year went by awesomely fast and I'm looking forward to many more years with my locs. I did a bantu knot out to celebrate the occasion, however my results are unfavorable. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Here at All Things Yasmine, I not only speak of loc and natural hair care, but also overall health care. We have to keep our bodies in check! I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2007. If you're not sure what PCOS is, it's basically not cancerous cysts in your ovaries which cause hormonal imbalance. This could result in sporatic weight gain, irregular menstral cycles...or lack there of, hair in unsightly places, and the list goes on. If you have PCOS or a friend who has been diagnosed, the following videos are helpful to those whop are unsure of how to maintain a healthy life living with PCOS. The first video explains what it is, the second video gives healthy food regimens for women with PCOS.

When I found out I had PCOS, all of a sudden my body's quirks began to make more sense. The excessive weight around my abdomen, my mood swings, lack of energy, missing periods, etc. The best way to remedy the situation and promote fertility is to eat right (cut down on the bad carbs), exercise, take a multivitamin, and talk to your doctor about the best medicine to rebalance your hormones. I currently take Vitex (since Dec 22, 2009) and from reading reviews in 8 weeks I should see a change in my lady functions. Vitex (chaste berry) is a natural supplement to promote women's healh; contains no hormones...which I love! It's a convenient and affordable substitution to BC (birth control). Making improvements to your diet or exercise program is certainly commendable, but you'll also need to reduce your stress on the job if you want to be happy. Don't try to do too much at once. Taking one small careful step after another is more effective than one big messy leap.

Locs: Relieve the Itchies tips

Power up with a spray bottle from your local dollar store. Use the ingredients below to relieve itchy scalps. Spray liberally:
- a few drops of peppermint oil, few drops of tea tree oil, a 1/2 cup of lemon juice, water

~~Warm conditioner to relieve itchy scalp~~:
1/2 can of coconut milk, a few drops of lavender oil, a few drops of chamomile oil, 1/2 cup of lemon juice. Simmer ingredients on stove for ten minutes (not too hot now!) If conditioner is warm enough to put your hands in, pour in spray bottle. Spray to scalp liberally, cover your hair in shower cap and keep it on for ten minutes before rinsing.

~~Other tips~~:
-Rinse entire scalp with Apple cider vinegar
-Witch hazel or Sea Breeze (apply with cotton swab)

Now if you're up on your Natural Celeb hair game, you'll know Goapele's locs are long gone, but this is the best pic to display my desired length. They're so beautiful, and I can see the similarities in loc width. My 1 year lociversary is January 15, also the founding day of my beloved sorority Allllpha Kappa Alllllpha Sorority Inc. I started out with a big afro, then little coils, and now I'm a teenager (in loc years), all within a year! The sky's the limit with my locs. We'll see how long they decide to grow.

I'm here to share all things natural: products, styling techniques, hair recipes, my locdom journey and other helpful natural hair tips. I'm also here to share some helpful and self motivating books, quotes, entertainment reviews, and from time to time I'll share some personal experiences.

I, Yasmine, am a woman, just like you. I go thru ups and down, highs and lows, but at the end of the day God keeps me motivated appreciating the little things we overlook in life.

I have been locking my tresses for 11 months and have been natural for 2 1/2 years. My big chop was in July 2007 and have never felt better about my appearance since going natural. I've had a perm for most of my life (since 5 yrs old) and was always curious about my real hair texture. It took me years to decide to go for it because of my fear of not having, what blacks folks have been calling for decades, good hair. I then began to notice all the sites that emerged, encouraging women of color to not be afraid of their own texture. People began proudly displaying pics, blogs, videos, of their beautiful afros, curls, and locs. I too wanted to be apart of the NATURAL MOVEMENT!!! So after 9 months of transitioning (with micros, kinky twists, straw curls, and weave ponytails), I decided to just do it! Since then, I haven't looked back. Here are a few pics that show my transition:

Prevailing past the PERM even gave me confidence to lose weight. I felt that if I could endure such a major change with my hair, then I could do anything for the betterment of my temple. I will share my health regimen with anyone who wants it, just send me a message.
